Anyone saved from a Chinese or Confucian background? Can you help me out?

Hi everyone,

I'm teaching soon in a seminary-like setting, training pastors in a third-world country. I've been assigned a few modules that I am familiar with, and also Confucianism as part of the World Religions curriculum, with which I am not familiar.

I've done my homework on Confucius and the five virtues, having become knowledgable enough about the teachings to reproduce them. But I live in a rural area where there are no Asians, so I can't do what I really want to do: talk to someone influenced by Confucianism. The area where I'll be teaching, though, is near a colony of Chinese immigrant workers. So I want to prepare my students to proclaim the Good News to them. To do that, I need to understand not just the teachings but the people.

For anyone raised in a background influenced by Confucian's teachings, what can you tell me about how it affects people? I could see many of its teaching leading to a wise and happy life, since it is so filled with Proverbial wisdom. But I could see it oppressing people as well be leading the away from the true Wisdom incarnate. How does that play out in real life?
