Christ died on our behalf, or in our stead? Why should I believe in Penal Substitutionary Atonement?

When the bible says Christ died for us, there are two different Greek terms. In my very basic understanding, this Greek word has some importance.

Given the context of the passages that say "on behalf" and the passage that says "in our stead", why should I believe Penal Substitution?

Especially given the context of old testament sacrifice being an offering and not a substitution, how did PSA become such a popular theory? Is it because of anthropological pessimism?
