Do Strict Baptists have assurance for salvation

I was preaching yesterday at a small evangelical church and there were some strict baptists there I asked if their children were saved (I feel guilty for being so direct, foolish really) and the son about 16 years old looked down ashamed and the Dad responded well sometimes we can think we’re saved and we’re not. Really confused and angry at myself for not being sensitive, I actually expected them to say yes to the way they were listening to the sermon. Please someone enlighten me? Thanks
