Ideas for child sponsorship/missionary support for youth

I have been working to find practical ways to connect the things we are teaching our youth (middle and high school) by arranging opportunities for application – intercessory prayer times, service projects, etc. One of the desires that my prayer times have yielded recently is the idea of keeping our focus off of just us and our individual needs and onto the gospel and physical needs of others in the group, the church, their schools and neighborhoods, this country and the world. Teaching this is easy; helping it stick is not, hence the desire for practical application.

I am interested in having the group sponsor a missionary and/or a child as part of all of this. Ideally, there would be missionaries that the church is already sending or partnering with that we can support; sadly we don't have that right now. With some work, it probably wouldn't be hard to find local missions needs. Barring that, I am interested to see if anyone can recommend missionary support and child sponsorship ministries if we choose to go that route. There are a few of them out there: Voice of the Martyrs, Samaritans Purse, Compassion, etc. and my understanding is that some of them are seen as "better" ministries than others.

Would anyone be willing to steer us towards or away from any of these groups should we decide to go this route? I leave that intentionally broad and vague because I'm interested to hear, anecdotally, how your involvement with them has impacted you or your church, etc.
