Philosophy of Teaching and Christ

A lot of colleges focus on a Liberal or Progressive Education Philosophy. They believe that a teacher should teach to the students. Teach to the student's experiences. In terms of teaching philosophy, this may have been more of the predominate philosophy in Public Education. It is wrong.

What are student's experiences? What stimuli are they receiving growing up? Many of them may have been watching TV, and being influenced by their friends and community. To teach to their experiences, someone is teaching them to live in "The World." Christians are to reject The World. The focus should be on Enduring Understandings. That would be more of a Classical or Perennial Education. God does not change. (Malachi 3:6,7)

The World the Bible tells Christians to reject is the a world of lies. It is a world of false perceptions, half truths, and deceptions. The Bible asserts Truth with a capitol T. Education should be focused on enduring understanding and objective morality, and not subjective opinions or points of view.

In the US Army, there are a few sayings.

"There is the right, way the wrong way, and the Army way."

"A Drill Sergeant can do in 9 1/2 weeks what parents and teachers failed to do in 18 years."

The US Army has standards. These standards may not be necessarily objective, but they are the standard. Given a soldier goes to a US Army School, he meets the standard or he fails or washes out.

In a University, what is The Standard? What is the goal, and what is the Philosophy? A University whose philosophy is "Pursuing Academic Excellence," may have the bar raised higher. It has a higher standard and possibly more objective standards. A University whose Philosophy is centered on Diversity may be lowering the standards. The Education may not be as good. The standard is lowered.

God has standards. In a Church there should be a standard. Given someone is falling short of the standard, he should be chastised and rebuked? (Hebrews 12:6)(Revelations 3:19) Given there are no standards, and the general attitude is live and let live, and the idea that God is love without context of God's Fatherly love, that Church is falling short.
