Question about the Reformers and Continuationism.

So when I started using this message board, I thought that cessationism was the clear Biblical teaching and everything else was babble nonsense. I was surprised to find confessional Presbyterians as well as Reformed Baptists who were continuationist. Now I'm teetering on the edge of continuationism, but as far as I can see, the Reformers and Puritans were all sold cessationists. Why was this? Why didn't they even consider the possibility that the miracle gifts were still in play? When did continuationism start becoming an accepted Reformed position?
