I've never really gotten why people assume this sort of thing. He came the first time fulfilling the prophecies of the Messiah in weird ways that were later explained but were not expected. Elijah came back as an entirely different person: John the Baptist. Why do we assume that Jesus will literally do all of the things described in the New Testament or even be the same exact person. Could He not come as another individual as Elijah/John the Baptist did?
